2018 Jeep Compass vs. Ford Escape

Midsize SUVs are the perfect mix of family car and 4×4 capability. Two of the most popular midsize SUVs on the road today are the 2018 Jeep Compass and the Ford Escape. If you’re looking for a midsize SUV to go off-roading or explore Penn Yan, Geneva, or Watkins Glen, you’re in luck. Friendly Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram put together this comparison to help you decide which one is right for you.

Jeep Compass vs Ford Escape: Engine Power

The 2018 Jeep Compass has a 2.4L Tigershark® Multiair® 2 engine that gets 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed manual transmission comes standard, but a 9-speed automatic is also available for improved overall performance and seamless shifting. It also has fuel-saving Stop/Start technology to enhance fuel economy. Overall, the Compass gets up to an EPA-estimated 32 MPG highway.

The Ford Escape also comes with a standard four-cylinder engine, but it’s not as powerful. Overall, it gets 168 horsepower. It also comes with a system similar to the Stop/Start technology in the Compass, the Escape can only get up to an EPA-estimated 30 MPG highway when properly equipped.

Jeep Compass vs Ford Escape: Off-Road Capability

The 2018 Jeep Compass offers two available drivetrains to get you through all kinds of off-road terrain. The Jeep Active Drive 4×4 System and the Active Drive Low 4×4 System in the Compass both switch from front-wheel drive to four-wheel drive when road conditions call for it. Plus, the Low 4×4 system offers a 20:1 crawl ratio with Rock Mode and a Selec-Terrain® Traction Management System. With these performance options, you’ll be able to get over any obstacles and through sand, snow, and mud.

The 2018 Compass isn’t limited to only conquering obstacles on dry land. With 8.5 inches of ground clearance it can drive through up 19 inches of water. The Ford Escape sits lower with a ground clearance of only 7.9 inches.

The Ford Escape has an Intelligent 4WD system that can handle adverse road conditions. However, it’s not ad advanced as systems featured for the Compass. So, you may have a bit of trouble getting through certain conditions that may come your way when you’re on your off-road adventure.

Jeep Compass vs. Ford Escape: Cabin & Technology

The 2018 Jeep Compass and the 2018 Ford Escape each feature seating for five and 60/40 folding seats. This allows for ample storage room. However, the Compass gives your passengers a little extra room for comfort by allowing the rear seats 38.3 inches of legroom, while the Escape only gives the second row 36.8 inches of legroom.

On both models, the bulk of the interior features are controlled through a touchscreen on the dashboard. This is where you’ll find Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™, and a rear back up camera. The Escape has an 8-inch touchscreen, however, the screen on the Compass is almost a half inch larger. At 8.4 inches it’s a little easier to read and navigate.

The Compass offers the same control when you’re outside the car too. It features SiriusXM Guardian™ so that you can lock, unlock, and start your engine all through your smartphone. The Ford Escape offers a similar feature, too, but it’s more complicated and not as easy to use.

Which Midsize SUV Is Right For You?

While the 2018 Ford Escape is a solid family car, the 2018 Jeep Compass offers more versatility and capable 4×4 drivetrains.

Whether you’re looking to go off-roading around the Finger Lakes and Green Mountains, or explore beautiful Penn Yan, Geneva, and Watkins Glen, the 2018 Compass can get you there with stability and control.
