2018 Jeep Renegade vs Kia Soul

If you’re in the market for a compact SUV, the Jeep Renegade and Kia Soul are two of the top picks in this crowded segment. They both offer spacious cabins, impressive performance, and advanced technology, but which is the right one for your needs?

Drivers in Watkins Glen, Geneva, and Penn Yan can find out the important differences between these SUVs with our 2018 Jeep Renegade vs. Kia Soul comparison.

The Jeep Renegade can be equipped with a 1.4L turbo 4-cylinder engine with 160 horsepower mated to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine with 180 horsepower and a 9-speed automatic transmission. The Soul offers a 130-horsepower 1.6L inline 4-cylinder engine, a 2.0L inline 4-cylinder with 161 horsepower, or a 1.6L inline 4-cylinder with 201 horsepower, mated to a 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic, or 7-speed automatic transmission.

Though the Kia Soul offers more engines, it can’t compete with the Jeep Renegade’s capability. While both offer 4-wheel drive systems, the Kia Soul isn’t designed for anything more than pavement, but the Jeep Renegade lives up to the Jeep name with off-road readiness in any configuration. It also offers an off-road-specialized Trailhawk model, which includes higher ground clearance, standard all-wheel drive, better approach and departure angles, and a rock traction setting.

The Jeep Renegade and the Soul have spacious well-appointed interiors with plenty of comfort. The Jeep Renegade has supportive, padded seats in both the front and rear, as well as ample legroom and headroom, whereas the Kia Soul lacks space and support in the rear row. Both vehicles offer luxury and convenience features to enhance the cabin as well.

For cargo space, the Jeep Renegade has 18.5 cubic feet of space with the seats up and a maximum cargo capacity of 50.8 cubic feet. The front seat folds flat as well, giving you the space and length to haul awkward or oversized cargo. The Kia Soul has comparable cargo space, but it lacks the folding front seat option for more cargo flexibility.

Like other Jeep models, the Jeep Renegade has plenty of technology features for all its trim levels. Along with Bluetooth compatibility, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ smartphone integration and premium sound, the Uconnect® infotainment system with a 7-inch or 8.4-inch touch screen is one of the most intuitive on market, featuring plenty of app compatibility and a straightforward menu. The Kia Soul’s infotainment system is much more finicky, less advanced, and only offers a 5-inch touch screen.

Both vehicles come with a rearview camera and can be equipped with an array of advanced safety features. Blind-spot monitors, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning are some of the highlights, giving you additional awareness and protection on the road.
